王定華還在西安某高校任教，一位常年在外邊為企業解決技術問題的碩士教師朋友和他聊天，說到有一位石油化工廠的老高工告訴他，測量球罐液位是困擾了石化行業幾十年的難題，不知道王定華有沒有辦法可以不開孔測量出里面的液位。這次對話，像一顆種子一樣在王定華的心里牢牢地生根發芽。他決定攻克“液位測量難，維修更難”的難題，創造出中國人自己的外測式液位儀。沒想到，這個29年前的決定耗盡了他一生的心血。

已是大學教授的王定華走出實驗室，創辦了西安定華電子有限公司。在給公司起名時，王定華的想法簡單而堅定，他要將自己的一生和這份事業綁在一起，因此取名定華。
一個剛剛成立的新公司想要打入市場、奠定行業地位，靠什么？王定華的答案是“過硬的新產品”。說干就干，王定華把科學家骨子里執著刻苦的精神一絲不漏地轉移到了企業家的身份里。從此，不管吃飯走路、上廁所或者睡覺，他都在思考這個問題，在外人眼里，王定華“瘋了”。而正是他這股“瘋勁”，幫他撬開了世界首臺外測式液位儀的大門。

王定華常年有胃病，有一次去醫院做超聲波檢查時，看到了超聲波儀器，忽然腦中靈光一閃，超聲波能不能穿透鋼罐壁呢？這個想法在他腦中逐漸擴大，沖擊著他那顆熱忱的心臟。當時，全世界都沒有人這樣測量過。王定華決定當第一個吃螃蟹的人。他向素不相識的超聲檢查室醫生借了醫院的超聲波診療儀。在那個年代，人與人之間的信任可能只是一個眼神的交匯。只憑一張手寫的借條，王定華借到了超聲波診療儀。 如獲至寶的王定華回到家后，埋進了廚房，圍著液化氣罐測量。家人們雖然對他的怪異舉動擔心，但還是選擇尊重與理解，任由他搗騰。一周之后，廚房里發出了一聲巨大的歡呼聲。王定華成功地測量到了液化氣罐的液位信號，由此確認了用超聲波測量鋼罐里液位的技術路線可行。 當時國內外液位測量產品基本都屬于接觸式測量，普遍存在精度低，穩定性不高，需要在儲罐上開孔安裝，存在潛在泄露點，維修更換要停車清罐，費用十分高昂。 新技術研發是一條艱難的路程，挫敗、疑惑、欣喜或隨之而來的失望等各種情緒不一而足。所幸的是，王定華面對困難時候的態度是堅持和樂觀：“這個方向不行，就及時轉彎，不太會為了眼前堵死的路坐立不安。困難是一直存在。但跳不過坎卻不會有，我總會想著，這邊放塊板，那邊架座橋。” 在那間不足80平的房間里，王定華堅持不懈，不斷探索，他帶領團隊潛心基礎理論和前沿技術的研究，攻克一個個技術難關，最終開發出了世界上首臺利用聲吶測距原理，“微振動分析”技術從容器外測量液位儀表——外測液位計。

為了檢驗第一代外測液位儀的安全可靠性，王定華開啟了漫長的檢驗之路。當時的他身無分文，只能騎著破舊的自行車，跑遍了西安地區所有的液化氣站，那些易燃易爆、劇毒、強腐蝕的，別人都不敢靠近的罐體，他也只身前往，嚴謹認真地測量。西安的春夏秋冬，在王定華騎著自行車叮當穿梭的風中而過。他用自己的手腳丈量了西安古城的每一寸土地，也一次次驗證了他發明的外測液位計的安全和高可靠性。

技術問題是解決了，又一難題接踵而至，那就是如何進行推廣銷售。對于長年伏案在研究室和課堂的王定華來說，銷售這一塊是空白的。如何改變這如何改變這種傳統的單純的搞科研變成既搞科研又搞轉化，這個過程是很艱難的。王定華決定利用一切可以利用的，白天搞研發，晚上學管理。為了學習先進的管理知識，王定華拿出了科研工作者特有的鉆研勁頭，向其他優秀企業學習，向書本上學習，向日常工作學習，在極短的時間里補足銷售、管理方面的知識儲備。
人們對于新的技術和產品，始終是抱持懷疑和謹慎態度的。王定華的銷售推廣之路異常艱辛和復雜。當時的中石化等公司普遍采用的是國外的液位儀，要進行替代非常困難。但是王定華相信自己的產品是最好的，憑著這份自信與篤定，他一遍遍地敲開業主的大門，一遍遍地宣講產品，用專業的數據和可靠的服務，一步步地把中國人自己發明的外測液位儀推向了中國，推向了世界。 經過時間的淬煉和沉淀，定華的產品和服務獲得了國內主流設計單位和用戶的廣泛認可。經過二十余年的發展，外測液位產品已廣泛應用于國內外煉油、化工、儲運、電力、冶金、醫藥等各行業，擁有包括中石化揚子石化、鎮海煉化、青島煉化、中石油大慶煉化、長慶煉化、哈薩克斯坦阿克糾賓油田、天津大沽化、魯西化工、東岳化工、中鹽集團、中煤集團、國電集團、陜煤集團等眾多國內外知名企業在內的上千余家客戶。同時，定華高度重視技術創新，逐步發展成為由規則的遵守者轉變為規則的制定者，積極參與國家行業標準、規范編制工作，2009年定華電子通過十余年不懈努力，作為當年唯一一家國內儀表參編企業。推動外測液位儀表進入國家行業標準，進一步提升國內及行業的話語權和地位。
